Fast facts

  • Lush river valley
  • The main city on the border between NSW and Victoria
  • Six hours’ drive south of Sydney

Why go there

The iconic Murray River is lined with 600-year-old river gums, "drowned" trees, paddle-steamers and houseboats. At the twin cities of Albury–Wodonga, straddling the border of NSW and Victoria, you’ll find a lively arts culture, heritage buildings, gardens and recreational facilities.

Nearby Corowa is known as the birthplace of Federation in Australia – it was in the old Corowa courthouse, in 1893, that the decision was made to draw up the constitution for the new nation.

The town has one of the country’s finest collections of intact Federation-style buildings under the protection of the National Trust.

Things to do

  • Fish, cycle, hike or ride a horse around Lake Hume, which holds six times the water volume of Sydney Harbour.
  • Retrace the footsteps of the elusive bushranger, Dan "Mad Dog" Morgan, in Culcairn.
  • Stock your picnic basket at the monthly Hume Murray Food Bowl farmers markets.
  • Admire the 360-degree view at Huon Hill.
  • Fish for Murray Cod, waterski, canoe or sail at Lake Mulwala.
  • Photograph the drowned trees at Lake Mulwala.

  • The photographic collection at the Albury Regional Art Gallery.
  • The Australian Army’s Museum at Bandiana, an astoundingly diverse museum incorporating a huge military museum.
  • Corowa Federation Museum, where you’ll learn how the federation of Australian states came into being.
